- In bankruptcy, an out-of-court negotiation with creditors whereby a debtor enters into an agreement with a creditor or creditors for a payment or plan to discharge the debtor's debt(s). Term is also used to refer to restructuring or refinancing by banks of nonperforming or overdue loans of creditors.
